Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza Celebrates 10th year

Before there was a Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza, there was the National Guard Armory on the site which was torn down in 1998. That façade represented an homage to Veterans especially those who served in the National Guard. Construction started on the current civic building and adjacent veterans plaza in 2008 with completion and facilities opening in 2010. The building is intended to be a community center for gatherings and events with the adjacent plaza intended to not only serve as a community events location but also to give honor to Veterans just as the previous Armory had done.

The current success of the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza has been created by countless individuals who have been passionate about community and placemaking. The original planning for the Civic Building at Veterans Plaza was shaped by the community through public forums, interviews, focus groups, and other activities. Participants represented a wide range of cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds with the common thread of constructing a truly unique facility that provides space for public, private, and non-profit sector events, including an outdoor space for concerts, festivals, and live entertainment. This spirit of community and placemaking continues today and is stronger than ever. The success of the Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza would not be possible without the contributions and commitment of dedicated County staff, involved citizens, service organizations, innovative thinkers and visionary leaders. This celebration of ten years of operations is about our diverse community and everyone that has contributed to this truly unique public space.

Special recognition goes to Eric Rasch, Mindy Williams, Justin Brown, David Park, Pahola Martinez, Dominique DeFo Fortue, Lawrence Jackson and contractors like Thais Mori, who manage the property and facilitate the activities and events.
