Goodbye Linden Oak Tree

The Linden Oak

At the juncture of I-270 and 355 Rockville Pike, adjacent to Beach Drive and Grosvenor Lane, once stood the magnificent Linden Oak Tree. The legacy of the Linden Oak spans well over three centuries, at one point, making this tree the oldest oak tree in Montgomery County, Maryland and the fourth largest in the State of Maryland. Unfortunately, the historic reign of the Linden Oak has officially come to an end. Due to a decline in health, the tree was finally scheduled for removal on July 18.

For those of you who are wondering what will become of the Linden Oak, there is good news regarding its memorial and legacy. The massive trunk of the tree will be left in place and preserved as a monument, with its two plaques encased in stone being left as markers. The wood that was saved during the removal of the tree will be repurposed and also used by a local artist.

CUPF's Attendance

While witnessing the removal of the Linden Oak, a CUPF representative was able to observe the well-deserved public viewing of the tree. In other words, they do not make them like this anymore. It takes years for a tree to mature and reach the size of the Linden Oak, placing this tree at the footsteps of the birth of Montgomery County. In support of MNCPPC, Montgomery Parks, CUPF was able to pay homage to the fabled Linden Oak.
